Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) offer free or low-cost health coverage for eligible children and other family members. These programs may be called by different names in your state. To find CHIP and Medicaid programs where you live, select your state or territory and review the ”Financial Assistance for Families” page.

  • Medicaid provides health coverage to millions of Americans, including eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. Medicaid is managed by states, according to federal requirements. Some states have expanded their Medicaid programs to cover all people below certain income levels. At HealthCare.gov, you can find out whether your state has expanded Medicaid and whether you qualify based only on your income. You can also find out you whether you qualify for savings on a health insurance plan instead. Go to HealthCare.gov or call 800-318-2596 (TTY: 855-889-4325).
  • CHIP serves uninsured children up to age 19 in families with incomes too high to qualify them for Medicaid. States set the income limits, and your eligibility depends on which state you live in. InsureKidsNow.gov provides information about Medicaid and CHIP, including information on health insurance programs and dental providers in your state.
